Artist’s Retreat – A Bold, Bright, and Functional Bedroom Suite
In our latest transformation, we had the opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind Artist’s Retreat for a Pittsburgh homeowner whose day job as an attorney contrasts beautifully with her vibrant passion for painting. She came to KBC with a vision: to reimagine her primary bedroom suite into a space that functions effortlessly for everyday use while capturing the clean, contemporary feel of a curated gallery—a blank canvas for her colorful and creative life.
Balancing Beauty and Function in Limited Square Footage
The design challenge? Add a soaking tub, increase closet storage, and maintain an open, modern aesthetic—all without expanding the existing footprint. Our team rose to the occasion with a smart, space-conscious layout that blends architectural restraint with artistic flair.
The centerpiece of the renovation is a custom wet room, featuring a soaking tub and shower situated behind a floor-to-ceiling Starphire glass panel, enhancing spatial openness while maintaining division. A wall-hung commode further reduces visual bulk, expanding floor visibility and emphasizing the clean lines throughout. The showstopper? A custom mosaic tile wall, crafted from the client’s own artwork—an intimate, expressive element that grounds the room with personal meaning.
A Clean, Gallery-Like Palette with Sculptural Warmth
Color was critical in achieving the desired "gallery" feel. The palette is crisp and refined, with high-gloss white cabinetry, white quartz countertops, and carefully layered satin gold finishes. The result is both neutral and luminous—allowing her artwork to shine while adding warmth and softness through lighting and materiality.
We maximized storage at every opportunity. Mirrored cabinetry above the vanity not only acts as a functional 3-way mirror, but also hides ample adjustable storage and even a docking drawer outlet—blending utility with beauty. Hidden mirrored niches above the commode and behind a full-length mirror cleverly house jewelry and accessories without interrupting the visual flow of the space.
Closet Concealment, Reinvented
Closet space was a must—but so was keeping the look clean and clutter-free. Our solution? Back-painted satin glass panels framed in brushed brass, designed to glide seamlessly and conceal custom closet cabinetry behind them. Integrated LED lighting behind the doors, in toe kicks, and within the reimagined bedroom tray ceiling brings an ambient glow to the entire suite. The new ceiling detail follows the natural slope of the existing roofline and adds dimension without overwhelming the space.
A Space as Unique as Its Owner
Every inch of this renovation was customized to reflect the homeowner’s lifestyle and personality—from gallery-inspired surfaces to functional, hidden storage. It’s a space that feels serene yet bold, organized yet full of expression.
The result is a true Artist’s Retreat—equal parts calming escape and creative sanctuary.
